EAST LANSING, Michigan April 29, 2001 Mother Hen Softwares tournament scoring system, handegolf , provided a real-time leaderboard at the 2001 Bruce Fossum/TeamGearOnline.com Invitational hosted by Michigan State University at the Forest Akers West Course. Fifteen collegiate teams competed, including Michigan State, Minnesota, Kent State, and Northwestern, while walking scorers used handegolf to provide up-to-the-minute team and individual scores to coaches and fans. Northwestern University shot rounds of 278-287-286=851 to finish 10 strokes ahead of second-place Minnesota in the final event before next weekend's Big Ten Championships. Northwestern Senior Luke Donald carded a final round of 7-under-par 64 to win his third consecutive tournament.
Parents, fans, media, and coaches had the unique opportunity to view real-time standings for this college event. Because the leaderboard was web cast, fans at home could also view the leaderboard to get up-to-the-minute standings for each team and player.
Can you imagine a college basketball game without an updated scoreboard? And then to not know the winner until thirty minutes after the game is over? said Mark Hankins, Head Golf Coach at Michigan State University. Real-time leaderboard action definitely adds excitement and fan appeal to college golf. Scores and standings change quickly because of the five-player, count four scores team format. Without a leaderboard, the drama is lost.
We proved the value of real-time scoring in collegiate golf. I am convinced that handegolf provides the best mechanism for managing collegiate golf scoring, said Greg Presley, co-founder of Mother Hen Software. I could feel the buzz from coaches and fans, especially when there were about 8 teams all within a few strokes of each other during the last round. It really heightened excitement for the crowd.
